I believe the seeds that you are speaking of are regular P. Somniferum, aka Breadseed poppies. I think they probably are regular sized, most likely their color is red.

Alien, I don't like your chances of getting seeds through customs. Basically, if they find them, they'll probably confiscate them, for fear of contamination or disease if nothing else.
Stay local. I'm australian too, and wouldn't risk ordering plant or seed material from overseas. There may be a way, but the pro's seem far outweighed by the con's.

Do you mean seedlings, or seeds?? Cause if they`re seedlings they wont be somniferums. They`ll most likley be californian poppies, they seem to be the most common here in Australia. If you meant actual seeds, what brand are they?? I have a patch of poppies growing at the moment from seeds I bought from Safeway. The brand is Hoyts and they come in 100g plastic bags for about $2. About a 90% germination rate.
Regarding getting seeds from overseas. I was going to get some sent over, so I emailed various companies about they`re experinces with sending to Australia. Most just e-mailed back with standard disclaimers but Izmir said they had never had any trouble sending to Oz?? Maybe you should email them for some more info. Considering the price though, I reckon you should just get some supermarket seeds (health food shops have em too)and plant them.
If you do decide to go overseas....keep us informed of what happens cause I`d love to get some Persian Whites.....what beautiful flowers!!

Good Luck!!!

You've got it made in Australia; Tasmania grows the most productive poppy crops in the world. Most likely, seed from health food stores or other bulk grain places will be a byproduct of poppies grown for poppy straw. They will be the grey-blue seeds used in cooking. Most likely they will be very high germination. So you'all have Safeway supermarkets? Used to be quite a few of those around here in the US at one time...

I ordered cannabis seeds from bc seeds and never got them
so the gamble is up to you, I think they would get confiscated.
I lost about $80:00 worth of seeds and yes that did piss me off.
I do not want to see this happen to anybody else

   My fellow somni-nauts,
tisk...tisk ....I grow both the local (tasmanian variety) here in Australia, plus have imported seeds from Izzy many times and never had a problem ....never ....ever. The beauty of customs organisations around the world is that they are understaffed, mis-focussed or plain incompetent ...or all of the above. As long as the shipper does not send you a crate marked "illegal opium poppies - 1000 kg - illegal - receive at your own risk", you are unlikely to have a problem.

BTW ...they used to spread rumours that P.som seeds were gamma irradiated to ensure their genetic impotence. Can you see the slow....straw munchin tassie farmer callin out "start up the gamma irradiator boys ...we got ourselves some seeds fer zappin". Nup .....sorry ...just another funny little urban legend. One thing that can occur though ....is that some suppliers wash and heat treat their seeds. From empiricle evidence though this must be pretty rare as most seeds germinate.

As a final comment .....if you order from a good source (eg izzy) your parcel will slip though. Even if they open it ...it is very non explicit in terms of data ....plus ....is there a test they could ...or would.... carry out to discover if you were trying to do something illegal. Nup ...they would just ask you to identify what they where ...or ...they would destroy them ....sob ...poor little buggers .......drip ....sniffle.

Ironman
